Abdominal Binder FAQ

Why is this binder only 6" wide/tall when the binders at the hospital are 9" or more?

We learned back in 1998 that the binders provided at the hospitals tended to be 9" in width/height. In fact, the founder of HysterSisters website developed these 6" binders because the 9" ones "hung" on the widest part of the tummy (usually the hips) and couldn't provide compression against the incision area because of this design flaw. The 9" binders also tend to roll from the top down or the bottom up depending on a woman's shape.  Kathy, the founder of HysterSisters,  found a manufacturer that would make a 6" wide binder with darts - to help match a woman's contour - and with velcro so that the binder could be snugged against the belly without rolling up or swirling and rotating around the belly. We think these are the best binders for women's abdominal surgeries!

Why is a binder helpful after hysterectomy?

Gentle compression is helpful after belly surgery. Our binders provide support directly to your tummy and back, and allow you to move with less pain and greater mobility. Compression aides to reduce recovery time. Our abdominal binders provide incision support, help prevent tearing, and make it easier to get out of bed, move and walk.

Can I wash my abdominal binder?

Yes! Gentle cycle and line dry is the best way to launder your binder. We also have Silky Sac laundry bags that protect the binder in the washer on delicate cycle and make sure the velcro does not catch on anything in the wash load.

When do I need to wear the abdominal binder? How long can I wear my binder?

Doctors typically put a binder on their patients after surgery in order to begin gentle compression from the first hours. If your hospital doesn't provide one, this binder can be worn from the very first day, over your bandage. You can wear your binder as long as you choose to wear it. It can be helpful even as you begin to get back to your normal routine and they can often be worn under your clothes. At some point, many women stop wearing the binder and switch to Post Op Panty or Support Panty - because they are less bulky and fit under normal clothing easier.

How tight do I wear the binder?

Your binder should be snug but not so tight that it leaves marks on your skin or hurts. It should also not be so loose that you feel no compression. Gentle compression is the best way to describe the "snug-ness" of your binder when you are wearing it.

What if my doctor says I do not need a binder?

Some doctors think the 9" or 12" binder provided by the hospital is adequate - and it may be! However, we have found after 20 years of selling our abdominal binders that our sizing is perfect for most women. And, there are some doctors who do not think a patient needs a binder - period. We think this is a lack of understanding how gentle compression can help their patients to get in and out of bed easier, get around in their house and get back to their normal activity easier. Without a binder, most women hold their belly as they get up and down from bed, up and down from the toilet, up and down from the sofa or chair and even when trying to turn over in bed.

Can this binder be used for a C-section? Tummy tuck? Hernia repair?

Absolutely. This binder was created to be used for women's abdominal surgeries. We could make a long list of the kind of surgeries helped by this binder. Share your binder with your sisters and friends!

Is this abdominal binder reimbursable by my medical insurance? Will you help me file a claim?

Your binder may be reimbursable by medical insurance. You can try this codes to file for reimbursement:  HSPCS code: "L0625 - Multiple Use Elastic Abdominal Binder".  The Hysterectomy Store will not help file your claim for products. The customer is responsible for all insurance paperwork. This abdominal binder is a lifesaver!
I wore the abdominal binder pretty much all the time the first two weeks after my hysterectomy. The gentle compression helped with the pain and helped me sleep on my side without feeling like my insides were falling out. The darts in the binder helped a lot with the fit. I also bought a larger, more expensive binder on Amazon but never wore it (too stiff and came up way too high on my stomach).

Good, but didn't fit me right
I ordered the size that should have fit based on my measurements, but when we got it, it was too small and wouldn't quite close. So I then ordered the next size up, which was easy to close. However, it was made for someone with a lot more curvy hips than I had. I liked that it didn't go up as high as the hospital one, but it just wouldn't stay in the correct position without more hips to fill it out and keep it in place better. Bummer I paid for 2 that didn't work for me. Good quality product though if you can get it to fit you.

August 26,2020 I had a hysterectomy. 2 weeks post op I still was not feeling as comfortable during sleep and holding my belly during walks. I am so happy I purchased the abdominal fitted binder. This has made a HUGE difference in my recovery process. I slept soundly the first night wearing it to bed and walk around feeling my abdomen is secure. Love it! Thank you

So glad I ordered this
My doctor said I didn't need a binder so I almost didn't order it. I got it anyway and I'm so glad I did. The nurses in the hospital helped me put it on as I was being discharged the first morning. Amazing the difference in how I can move and how I feel wearing this. Don't doubt it - there is a reason why this store sells this for hysterectomy patients! (P.S. I gave it to my daughter for after her c-section and it helped her so much too!)

Abdominal binder
I just received my binder. I'm 9 days post op from total hysterectomy.,I wish I had ordered this binder sooner. It is a godsend! I researched a lot of different binders, but went with this one, after reading all the reviews from everyone.,and I'm so glad I did. I could feel the difference immediately. I'm a side sleeper , and I just could not get comfortable. This binder def. helped with that. So if you are on the fence about which binder to get or if you even need one--get it. You will be glad you did!!

Thank you for the abdominal binder, which arrived last week. Finally, relief! Now I have the support I need to walk a little outside each day, without that feeling that I must hold my hands over my belly to support it (looks odd to the neighbours, you know).

I have had c-sections in the past and wish I had on of these binder bands back then. Two weeks ago I had a large upper abdomen hernia and gallbladder surgery. The band has been a lifesaver! With my hysterectomy now scheduled in a few weeks, I know this will really make a difference again. Thank you so much for a wonderful site and making available such wonderful products!

A Must Have!!!
I am so glad I ordered this! Helped with ride home and helps with getting around! Since I didn't know what size I would go down to (if lost weight) I ordered the size I needed at the time before LAVH and one size down for just in case. I'm glad I did so as the first size fit great coming home from hospital. On day 3 I ended up using the smaller size down.
Great item to have for extra comfort!

Just buy one.
Buy one. Actually, buy two if you're anywhere near being between sizes. And order it before your surgery if you can. I didn't order until a couple of weeks post surgery, and I wish I'd had it from the beginning--I'd have slept a lot better for sure.

These have darts in them so they fit the curve of your back and don't move around. They really *really* help with swelling and helped me with pain. And if you're a side sleeper they're amazing.

I had an open abdominal hysterectomy (so one large incision) and this was the perfect size.

They Hyster Sisters store had it to my door in two days. :)

Not as described
This was not at all as pictured mine had these vertical seams down it, like that was supposed to offer more support, but it doesn't. It looked nothing like the one in the picture which looks more comfortable than mine.

Holdin' It Together
My abdominal binder was great for post-op belly support. I was so accustomed to using a pillow after my laparoscopies that I forgot to use my abdominal binder for the first week after my hysterectomy. I'm currently a size 18 and ordered the queen size which was actually too big. It works, but if I were ordering again I'd get the next size down.

I also agree that it's great for slimming the muffin top issue, especially when wearing jeans, which seem to be extra uncomfortable after surgery. :)

Very helpful
I had the DaiVinci procedure and this binder helps hold in your stomach. It helped me to be able to start walking longer and not feel any pain at 3 weeks out. I wear it when I do light housework or if I'm on my feet a lot. I only wish I would have ordered it BEFORE surgery.

This is a great product and the band is the perfect size to wear under your clothes (6 inches wide). It is not bulky like the one I came home from the hospital in. Provides lots of support also. I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

Necessary!
I am still early in my recovery, but I have used my binder for trips out of the house and so very grateful to own one. The vibration of being in the car hurts so bad, but the binder cuts that pain down by ALOT! Before the hysterectomy I wore size 14-16 and they took a fibroid out the size of a football. I was worried about what size of binder to buy since I knew to expect swelly belly and I was close to the biggest the princess size would go. I went ahead and ordered the princess size and it works even as my belly swells through the day. When my belly swells it is definitely larger than it was prior to surgery, but the binder is working just fine. Hope this helps

Great for recovery
Overall I like the product, but for me, it wasn't high enough. My incisions were in 5 different places & that made it hard for me to wear the band, because it wasn't high enough to cover all the incisions. Now that my incisions are healing, it's easier. It's very comfortable & doesn't stick out when wearing nice clothes. I have noticed my bloat has gone down since wearing it.
